Key Responsibilities of a Flagger
Flaggers play a critical role in maintaining safety and efficiency at road and utility work sites. Their primary responsibilities include:
Traffic Control
Direct vehicles and pedestrians safely through and around construction zones using stop/slow paddles, flags, and hand signals in accordance with local traffic laws.
Work Zone Safety
Ensure a safe environment for workers, drivers, and pedestrians by maintaining awareness of job site conditions and reporting any hazards or incidents promptly.
Communication
Maintain clear communication with other flaggers, crew members, and supervisors to coordinate safe traffic flow and job site logistics.
Equipment Operation
Set up, maintain, and remove temporary traffic control devices such as cones, signage, and barriers. Use two-way radios and traffic wands as needed.
Compliance
Follow all company policies, OSHA regulations, and state/local traffic control guidelines. Wear required PPE including high-visibility clothing, hard hat, and safety gear at all times.
Professional Conduct
Represent the company professionally by being punctual, alert, and courteous to both coworkers and the public.
Crew Member Equipment:
Every flagger must be properly equipped to ensure safety, visibility, and effective communication on the job site. Below is a list of standard gear required for all crew members, along with the reason each item is essential:
Stop/Slow Paddle
Used to control the flow of traffic through the work zone. This paddle is the primary signaling device that ensures vehicles stop or proceed safely.
High Visibility Safety Vest
Enhances visibility during daylight and nighttime conditions. Reflective striping ensures drivers can see the flagger from a distance.
High Visibility Safety Pants
Provides full-body visibility, especially in low-light or high-traffic environments. Often required to meet state and federal safety standards.
High Visibility Rain Gear (Jacket & Pants)
Keeps the flagger dry while maintaining high visibility during inclement weather. Designed with reflective materials and waterproof construction.
Hard Hat
Protects the flagger from potential overhead hazards, falling objects, and other site-specific dangers. Often color-coded for crew identification.
Traffic Control Wand
Used during low-light or nighttime operations to direct vehicles clearly and safely with illuminated signals.
24”x24” Safety Flag
An alternative or supplement to paddles in some scenarios. Used to grab driver attention in emergency or backup situations.
Two-Way Radios w/ Charger *(Drivers Only)*
Essential for communication between crew members, drivers, and supervisors. Enables coordination across large or noisy job sites.
All equipment must be worn or carried as required and maintained in good working condition. Proper gear is not only a safety requirement—it’s a reflection of professionalism on the job site.
